I talked with Rep. Christopher S. Murphy, D-5th District, outside the Chase Avenue Stop & Shop in Waterbury on June 14. He had set up office hours, calling it “Congress on Your Corner,” to speak with his constituents.
It was nice to meet and thank him particularly for his efforts to bring attention to the need for brownfieldcleanup grants for Waterbury. With the economy struggling, it’s more important than ever to do what we can to bring business back to Waterbury.
That’s why I was impressed to hear about Rep. Murphy organizing a trip to Washington, D.C., for Mayor Michael J. Jarjura to advocate for money to help the city clean up contaminated land. If we can revitalize the Waterbury Industrial Commons, we can create more jobs in the city.
Rep. Murphy’s effort to put pressure on the leaders of his party, all the way to the top, is admirable. My thanks go out to him and Mayor Jarjura for taking our case to Washington. If we don’t ask for some of our tax dollars back to clean up our city, we won’t get them. And without those cleanup funds, we will have a hard time attracting the jobs we need to bring the shine back to the Brass City.
