ASSOCIATED PRESSCHESHIRE — U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy says he’s introducing legislation that would allow nonpartisan groups to hold voter registration drives at federal veterans homes, hospitals and other veterans facilities.
The bill also would allow groups to help veterans request absentee ballots and learn how to use voting machines.
In May, Veterans Affairs Secretary James P. Peake issued a directive suspending registration drives. He said the move was made to avoid disruptions and because a law prohibits federal employees from engaging in political activities on government time.
Connecticut officials helped launch a nationwide effort to overturn the rule. Murphy, who represents the state’s 5th District, is working with fellow lawmakers from Pennsylvania and California on the bill.
