Murphy Helping To Crack Down On Oil Speculators

The July 10 letter by Stanley Masayda, “Increasing energy production a matter of life and death,” unfairly attacked Rep. Christopher Murphy, D-5th District, for not doing enough on gasoline prices. Rep. Murphy has been traveling all around the district listening to people’s concerns about rising energy prices, and he has been diligently working in several areas to provide relief.

He supports a crackdown on the Wall Street energy speculators who have been driving up the price of oil; he recently voted for legislation that would give the Commodity Futures Trading Commission emergency powers to reduce energy speculation, and as a result, hopefully reduce the price of oil. He also backs use-it-or lose-it legislation forcing oil companies to drill on the federally leased land they have before they would be eligible for new federal leases. This would ensure major oil companies are producing oil from the 68 million acres of offshore land they have.

Rep. Murphy gets the financial burden energy prices have been putting on our families. That’s why he’s been supporting realistic measures to help lower energy prices for us.
