Murphy helped protect taxpayers

I have been very confused and concerned about the economic bailout.

In the beginning, it seemed like the president was forcing us to hand
over $700 billion to corporate executives and bail them out of their
bad investments — which no one wants to do without some measure of
assurance that preventive controls will be put in place for the
future.

But Congress stepped up, and made major changes to the president’s
three-page plan. Chris Murphy has been a part of that process, working
hard to protect our interests in this fight — our jobs and our
retirement funds.

Congressman Murphy has indicated that the legislation is far from
perfect, but that it is very different from what Bush originally
proposed.

The bill he supported made sure Wall Street was paying for the bulk of
the program, limits the compensation of CEOs for the first time in
history, and limits taxpayer money in the program.

Executives should be held accountable for their actions and this bill
is the first step in that direction. Clearly, shareholders cannot
effectively effect system change so congressional oversight is needed.

I am proud of Congressman Murphy’s stand on this issue.
