Murphy for Congress

Oct 24, 11:30 AM

Torrington Register Citizen

Unseating long-serving and well-respected incumbent Nancy Johnson two years ago was no small task, and voters did not capriciously entrust the job to the then-young and earnest state senator from Southington, Chris Murphy.

So far, Washington, D.C., does not appear to have tainted the qualities voters liked in Chris Murphy. Congressman Murphy is still young, still earnest, and brings a refreshing, perhaps generational, difference in approach to the job.

Murphy deserves another two years as the 5th District’s representative in the U.S. Congress.

And the next two years will be a test of what kind of representative he will be.

Odds are that Murphy will be serving with a stronger Democratic majority, with a Democratic president. It’s been about 15 years since we had that, and, with his talk of redistributing (your) wealth, President Obama’s agenda will make Bill Clinton look like Ronald Reagan.

One of the things that impresses when you speak with Chris Murphy is how keenly aware he is about the near 50-50 “blue/red” split among voters in the 5th District, and how seriously he seems to take his role in representing the entire district, rather than just his party’s stand on issues.

Again, the test will come over the next two years. We hope he continues to preach bipartisanship at a time when Democrats will be able to push through at least some of their agenda without reaching across the aisle.

We are also impressed with how much Chris Murphy talks about supporting businesses, and approaching every piece of legislation with the aim of protecting their ability to retain and create jobs.

Nothing else should come close to being the highest priority for a congressman representing Northwest Connecticut.

It’s encouraging to hear Chris Murphy talk about having a “laser-like focus” on weighing every bill’s “impact on the cost of doing business.”

That stands in stark contrast to the message preached by some of his own party’s leaders and colleagues in the Connecticut delegation, who see bigger government and more regulation as the answer to every problem … even problems that were created in the first place by bigger government and an excessive tax burden.

Chris Murphy has earned a second term, and as long as he continues to listen to and support the businesses who are employing people and creating jobs in Northwest Connecticut more than he listens to Nancy Pelosi and the special interests hoping to cash in on the Democratic Party’s new-found power, he will have our support.
