Rep. Christopher S. Murphy, D-5th District, said federal officials gave a warm reception Wednesday to Mayor Michael J. Jarjura’s pitch for environmental cleanup money.

“The mayor made the case that the city has given so much to this country through defense manufacturing that it’s time for the federal government to give a little back to the city,” said Murphy.

Jarjura met with Rep. John Murtha, D-Penn., and the staff of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, DCalif., to seek help in cleaning up the Waterbury Industrial Commons property on Thomaston Avenue.

It’s hoped the site will become a central public works facility and an expansion space for small manufacturing businesses already there.

Murphy said it remains to be seen if funding can be secured in the federal 2008-09 budget or if presidential politics will delay any decisions on assisting the city.
