To the Editor:

The campaign season is upon us and already we are seeing the negative campaigns. However, here in the Fifth Congressional District, we saw in 2006 that negative campaigns don’t cut it in Southbury.

Back in 2006, many were skeptical when Chris Murphy refused to get in the gutter with the smear campaign waged by Nancy Johnson. We told him that he had to respond.

Chris said that “how you win is as important as winning.” He was right and he won convincingly in Southbury as well as throughout the district, as people saw the mean-spirited and baseless claims of the Johnson advertising funded by contributors from outside our district.

I don’t know how the campaigns will unfold at the national level and can only hope that the candidates rise above the fear and smear that their campaign advisors promote.

But here in Southbury we should hold the local candidates running for state Senate, Robert Kane and John McCarthy, to the standard set by Chris Murphy.

Whoever starts with the “smear and fear” should not get your vote; they won’t get mine.
