An Intern Recounts His First Few Weeks On The Campaign

July 11, 2008

Hi all, I’m Dan a summer intern working for Chris Murphy’s re-election campaign. I’m from Brookfield and decided to spend my summer working hard to re-elect Chris as the 5th District’s congressman. I have lived in the district almost my entire life and am glad to see we finally have a Democrat representing our district.

The other summer interns and myself have been going through lots of training. The training has been long but also very helpful. Getting to know the staff has also been a plus. There are lots of excellent people here at team Murphy. Going through the first few weeks has been quite an experience, learning all the different intricacies of canvassing voters in the 5th District of Connecticut. We also learned the long and storied history of the 5th district, including the nicknames of the major population centers in the region. The 5th district is unique with the many different types of people who reside in the area. I canvassed for the first time in the 5th, which has been very pleasant. Being able to talk to the people of the area has been the best part of the internship. All the constituents have many different concerns but all are worried about the direction the country is currently headed.

I also went to a couple of events in our district. The first was a town concert series. It was a fine evening with people sitting on blankets with their families. We handed out surveys and enjoyed the fine music the concert had to offer. It was nice to see so many people out enjoying the music with their families. Some brought grills to make some food, or others brought their own food with them. The other event I went to was to celebrate the Fourth of July. People were out with their families enjoying a good summer outing. A couple other interns and I also played Frisbee. We also talked to the people there and were happy to hear positive things they had to say about Chris. As soon as the fireworks kicked off we sat down and took in the fine fireworks display. The two events I attended were lots of fun and positive for the campaign.

I also was pleasantly surprised that the congressman decided to stop by and have lunch with all of the summer interns. First he took the time to hear a little bit about our personal history and why we were working for him. After that he went over how he first got involved in politics. Then we had a roundtable discussion on local issues and what lies ahead of us for the rest of the summer. He wished us luck with the rest of the summer and told us he would be working along side us later in the program.

These first few weeks have been full of twist and turns. I have hit the ground running and I’m ready to give it my all for Chris and the 5th district. So keep up on the blog, another intern will be posting soon.
